Bad News

James Stockdale has died.

The guy was a hero. He flew Skyhawks during the Vietnam war and was shot down in 1965. He stayed a prisoner of war in North Vietnam until he was released in 1973.

He may have been from the wrong side of the Political fence to where I sit, but when I read about his life it was obvious that he had honour, integrity and honesty. He was Ross Perot's vice-presidential candidate in the 1992 US Presidential Election for the Reform Party - which he obviously lost because he was neither Democrat nor Republican. Despite this, he and Perot gained nearly 20 million votes - about 19% of the total.

His honesty shone through when he discussed the Gulf of Tonkin incident - the supposed attack on American ships that precipitated their direct entry into the Vietnam War:

[I] had the best seat in the house to watch that event, and our destroyers were just shooting at phantom targets—there were no PT boats there.... There was nothing there but black water and American fire power.
